MapGuide at Oracle Open World: Information Station Kiosks and Leveraging Berkeley DB XML

Oracle Open World (OOW) is happening this week in San Francisco.  Maybe a better way toImg_1850 put it is that OOW is happening to San Francisco this week.  OOW is ubiquitous.  Rumour has it that Oracle is expecting 56 000 attendees.  Downtown hotels are sold out.  I've heard that Oracle employees are out in Oakland and other surrounding municipalities to make way for customers and partners to stay in downtown San Francisco.

One of the things that Oracle has commissioned for this event is 110+ Information Station kiosks with 50" flat screen displays, where attendees can search for exhibitors, session and demo locations, partner booths, hotspots , events, pavilions and lounges, and then view Interactive maps of the twelve OOW facilities including Moscone South/North/West, Marriot, Yerba Buena, Palace Hotel, Intercon, Westin, Hilton, and Metreon.  The web-based application, which is designed to help attendees navigate around OOW, was developed by Pacific Data Resources and integrates MapGuide Enterprise 2009, Oracle 10g R2, with Oracle Schedule Builder.  One of the interesting capabilities is the “You Are Here” feature.Img_1853    Each kiosk is location smart and provides direction information from its location to the other venues.

I've got a session Monday afternoon to talk about  how MapGuide leverages Berkeley DB XML for the MapGuide resource repository.  I'm doing this in cooperation with the Autodesk development folks responsible for the repository implementation, Steve Dang, Bruce Dechant and Bob Bray.

Unfortunately I am only at OOW Monday so I am going to miss some interesting sessions including quite a number on Oracle Spatial.  Monday evening I am flying to the UK where I will be giving a talk at AGI GeoCommunity '08.
