President Obama has signed a Presidential Memorandum on Federal Leadership on Energy Management. It directs the Federal Government to source 20 % of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. Currently about 7% of the electricity the government uses is renewable.
Since 2009, when President Obama directed signed Executive Order 13514 on Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance, the Federal Government has:
- Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 15 % from FY 2008 levels
- Reduced energy use per square foot in Federal buildings by more than 9 % since FY 2008
- In FY2013 is getting 7 % of its electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
