Recently I attended and presented at the Kansei Open Source Conference in Osaka. This conference is dedicated to all forms of open source, but thanks to Professor Venkatesh Raghavan of Osaka City University there was a Open Source Geospatial SIG that attracted well-known speakers and organizers from around the world including Markus Neteler; Tyler Mitchell; Lorenzo Becchi; Schuyler Erle; Koki Iwao; Toru Mori; 野田和徳; Hirofumi Hayashi; Daniel Kastl; Osamu Inoue; Noriyuki Yanagibori, Kazunori Noda, and myself. The Open Source Geospatial SIG was very well attended and in addition there was a session where the geospatial folks were introduced to the general open source community Show
I talked about Web 2.0 and importance of enabling field force participation for utilities. It is interesting that this is becoming a common theme within the open source geospatial community. In addition to Fusion/MapGuide/FDO, OpenLayers, FeatureServer, and GeoServer provide support for spatial editing. Osamu Inoue demonstrated how to build an edit application with MapGuide.
Marcus Neteler gave a fascinating talk showing some of the things he has been able to do with GRASS, really incredible, and Schuyler Erle and Lorenzo Becchi talked on open source implementations of the WPS, web processing service. The entire open source geospatial conference program covered two days and can be found at Kansei Open Source Geospatial Program . Professor Venkatesh, Noda-san, and the other organizers really are to be congratulated for an outstanding event, which I hope will be repeated for many years to come.
