Public access to county GIS data in California is gathering legal precedents. The California Court of Appeal in a unanimous decision affirmed the
Santa Clara County Superior Court's decision requiring Santa Clara County
to comply with requests for spatial data (parcel base map) from the public, under the conditions of California's Public Records Act (PRA), at the cost of duplication, and without restrictions on how it is used. One of the most active proponents of public access to county geospatial data is the California First Amendment Coalition (CFAC).
