This is something I meant to blog about last year, but somehow it didn't make it. 3D printing does not refer to printing a 3D model on a piece of paper, which is what I thought it was until Allister Lundberg showed me examples of 3D printing about a year go. 3D printing refers to creating a 3D model in AutoCAD, exporting an STL file and then printing a 3D object using basically a multi-pass inkjet-like process, but with a material which can be plastic or resin rather than ink. Absolutely amazing. The photo is from Z Corporation where you can find many other photos of 3D printed objects.
the "printing a 3D model on a piece of paper" is a common perception of 3D printing and most people are amazed once they see what it really is!
here is a video of it in action:

Also Autocad isn't the only software that can be used to produce 3D printing :-)

I was at the Italian CRS4 research institute in February and had the joy to see such a 3D printer - really cool (http://www.crs4.it/vic/cgi-bin/project-page.cgi?acronym='DISTRICT-LAB3D' ). Folks of the CRS4-VIC labs also published recently "RATMAN", a framework for terrain streaming and rendering (available from http://ratman.sourceforge.net ).
