According to an article in the Globe and Mail, China is bringing on more wind power than the electric power grid can handle. There are two challenges facing the power industry in China in exploiting wind power generation.
First of all there is a lack of transmission capacity to bring wind power to the urban centres where most of the demand is. The other problem is that local power utilities are not incented to connect renewable energy projects to the grid. The result is an underutilization of wind power capacity in China. The gap between capacity and the ability to deliver power is estimated to be on the order of 2.8 gigawatts. (Photo courtesy of China Daily).
