The Australian parliament has passed a law requiring that renewables comprise 20% of electricity generation by 2020. Coal is responsible for 80% of Australian electricity generation. Currently renewables comprise something between 6.5% and 8% of Australian electricity generation, most of which is hydro. At the present time wind and solar amount to only 0.4% of total power generation.
According to the Minister of Climate Change even with one-fifth of Australia's electricity coming from renewable sources by 2020, the nation's GHG emissions are forecasted to be 20% higher than 2000 levels.
The government had proposed a carbon emissions tax starting in 2011 with the objective of reducing Australia's GHG emissions by up to 25% below 2000 levels by 2020, but this was defeated by the Senate.
Australia only contributes 1.5% of world GHG emissions.
