President Obama's proposed 2011 budget includes $36 billion in new loan authority – for a total of $54.5 billion – to expand support for Department of Energy loan guarantees for nuclear power facilities. Nuclear power is attractive because it is virtually emissionless, it provides a domestic alternative to imported fossil fuels; and it is arguably cheaper, more reliable alternative to renewable sources like wind and solar.
The actual construction of the first new nuclear reactor will still probably not begin before 2011 or 2012. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is currently reviewing 13 applications for new nuclear power plants.
Even Bill Gates has weighed in on nuclear power in a recent TED talk.
