Japan introduced a feed-in tariff in November of last year which requires electric utilities to
buy solar power supplied from residential and commercial sites at a premium rate. The Japanese trade ministry has proposed expanding the feed-in tariff to include hydroelectric, wind turbine and geothermal generators. The proposed feed-in tariff would run for between 10 and 20 years.
The government's objective is 10 percent of the country’s primary energy to come from renewable sources by 2020. In 2007 about 3 of Japan's energy derived from renewable energy sources. In 2009 Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama promised that Japan would reduce emissions 25 percent from 1990 levels.
