The Great Lakes contain 20% of the planet's fresh water. About 35 million people depend on the Great Lakes, 30% pf the Canadian population and 10% of the US population. The economy of the Great Lakes basin is estimated to be about $4.2 trillion annually which would make it the world's fifth largest economy, behind China and ahead of Germany. According to the EPA report State of the Great Lakes 2009, in 2004, water was being withdrawn at the rate of 164 billion litres (43 billion gallons) per day, with 95 percent being returned to the Lakes and 5 percent lost to consumption. 83 percent of the water is used for thermoelectric and industrial uses and 14 percent for public water supply systems.
The state of the environment in and around the Great Lakes is disturbing. The National Film Board has created an incredible interactive web site that conveys just how serious the situation is. The NFB Great Lakes site has been nominated for three Webby awards.
