Previously, highly radioactive water has been reported inside turbine buildings. Tuesday, March 29, 2011 02:21 JST (01:21:00 p.m. Monday March 28 ET) NHK reports that highly radioactive water has been found in a trench housing cables and pipes outside the Unit 2 turbine building. TEPCO said on Monday that a radiation reading of more than one sievert per hour (1,000 mSv/hr) was recorded from a puddle in a trench outside Unit 2. Apparently the trench extends 76 meters toward the sea, but does not reach the sea. TEPCO says that contaminated water was not flowing into the sea. Previously TEPCO has reported seawater contamination near the plant.
There still does not seem to be information about the source of the radioactivity. The IAEA has reported that NISA informed the IEC that a meeting is planned with TEPCO to determine the origin and path of water in the turbine buildings of Units 1 to 4.
JAIF reports that It is presumed that radioactive material inside the reactor vessel would have leaked outside the containment vessel at unit-1, 2 and unit-3, based on the investigation of the water sampled at turbine building. It also says that damage and leakage is suspected to Unit 2 reactor containment.
