The IAEA has reported that NISA has confirmed finding traces of plutonium that most likely resulted from the nuclear accident. NISA said that TEPCO had found evidence of plutonium in two of five soil samples. The isotopic composition of the plutonium found in the soli samples suggests the material came from the reactor site.
At a press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Edano said the samples appeared to contain the type of plutonium used in nuclear fuel, making it most likely that reactor fuel rods were the source. Unit 3 uses MOX, a mixture of uranium and plutonium oxides, as fuel. He said further that the traces of plutonium, combined with the detection of highly radioactive water at Unit 2, "back up the view that nuclear fuel rods have partially melted."
