NHK has reported increasing damage to fuel rods at Reactor Units 1 and 2. Sea water is being pumped into the reactors to cool them down, but in both reactor cores, the coolant levels are low and fuel rods are exposed (not fully submersed in water). TEPCO has estimated the extent of small holes or cracks in the fuel rods, based on the amount of radioactive material in the coolant.
- Unit 1 - damage has increased from 43% to 70% of fuel rods
- Unit 2 - damage has increased from 14% to 33% of fuel rods
Damaged fuels rods increase the risk of radioactive leakage.
