Apparently the US Administration has asked the Supreme Court to determine if the police need a warrant before installing a GPS to track a vehicle. A criminal conviction was overturned by a federal appeals court on the grounds that the police did not obtain a warrant before secretly installing a GPS device on a man's car and monitoring his whereabouts for a month. The appeals court said that the police violated the Fourth Amendment which protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures, as well as requiring any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause. Some people are concerned that not requiring a warrant would open the door to wide spread tracking of citizens with or without legal cause.
Thanks to Steve Swazee for pointing me to this.
