Autodesk has announced AutoCAD Utility Design 2012 (AUD), a model-based design solution for electric utility distribution networks. AUD integrates a rules engine into the AutoCAD Map 3D environment and includes an electric distribution data model and associated rules. The rules engine enables electrical and structural calculations such as voltage drop, flicker, guying, pulling tension and sag to not only to be run in an AutoCAD environment, but also to be modified without programming. Designs can be visualized in both 2D and 3D. AUD automates generating bill of materials, and when linked to a table of compatible units, job estimates. With this model-based solution, designers and engineers can be more productive, which has become critical as utilities ramp up for the smart grid. Equally critical in the context of the workforce challenges that utilities are facing, AUD can help younger, inexperienced workers to design productively faster.
