A new survey of Californians' attitudes on the environment has been released by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC).
Renewable energy
California's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) policy requires that one-third of the state’s electricity come from renewable energy sources by 2020. According to the PPIC survey, this policy is supported by 77% of Californians, 46% of whom whould continue to support it if it meant higher electric power rates. 80% also support increased federal funding for developing new renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydrogen technology. Two thirds of Californians support AB 32 the bill that requires the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. Over 80% support government regulation to mandate that utilities increase their use of renewable energy, industry reduce emissions, and automakers reduce emissions from new cars.
The investment into alternative power generating technologies such as nuclear energy may need to be measured against the potential cost when things turn against you as unfortunately happened this year in Japan. Coal prices and coal statistics show developing economies are more likely to increase their investment into & their use of coal mining in coming years because of coal's affordability and ability to quickly meet increasing demands for electricity and steel. www.coalportal.com
