India's energy demand has grown an average of 3.6% per annum over the past 30 years. In December 2010, the installed power generation capacity of India stood at 165 GW.
According to a recent article, India is falling behind in adding new electricity generation capacity in 2011. According to the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers' Association (IEEMA), only 2.4 GW of generation capacity was added in the fourth quarter of 2010-11 against a target of 6.7 GW.
By comparison China increased its generation capacity by 10% in 2010-11 to nearly a thousand GW and plans to add 100 GW every year for the next five years.
Land acquisition and the availability of fuel were cited as the main reasons for the shortfall. But other problems contributed incluidng a shortage of domestic supply of skilled manpower.
