According to the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs the world's population will reach seven billion roughly around October 31. A global population of 9.3 billion people is projected by 2050.
Since 2009 over half of the world's population lives in cities. The trend of increasing urbanization is projected to continue. In about 35 years, it is estimated that two thirds of the world's population will live in cities.
In 2011 there are 893 million people over the age of 60 worldwide. By 2050 it is estimated that 2.4 billion people will be over 60.
In 2011 60 per cent of the world's population lives in Asia and 15 per cent in Africa. Asia's population, which is currently 4.2 billion, is expected to peak around the middle of the century at 5.2 billion and then to begin a slow decline. The population of Africa is expected to double by 2044. The population of the Americas, Europe and Oceania combined is about 1.7 billion in 2011 and is projected to rise to nearly 2 billion by 2060 and then decline.
