It looks like the Ontario Liberals will win a third term, at least partly because of a very green platform. Over the past two terms the Liberals have introduced a number of green measures that have made Ontario one of the greenest jurisidictions in North America. The Liberal platform in this election continues to be green.
- The Green Energy Act passed in 2009 includes a Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program which has already led to 7000 micro power generation projects. (The Progressive Conservatives wanted to scrap the FIT program.)
- Coal phase-out by 2014 (Also supported by the PCs.)
- New nuclear capacity (The PCs wanted to speed up nuclear power development.)
- Clean Energy Benefit, a 10 per cent rebate that the Liberals will continue to give to energy ratepayers until 2015.
- Public transit in the form of expanded GO Train service in the greater Toronto region
- Electric cars will make up five per cent of new vehicle sales by 2020. The Liberals will invest $80 million in charging stations and offer a rebate for buying an electric vehicle.
