The Green Energy and Green Economy Act was passed by the Ontario legislature in 2009. It mandated distributed generation (DG) enablement to ensure open access to the electric power grid to all residents of Ontario, which means that the local power company is required to connect micro-power projects to the grid. Secondly it made it financially very attractive for micro-power projects, especially photovoltaic projects, through a feed-in-tariff (FiT) program.
Since then about 7,000 micro-projects, mostly involving photovoltaic panels, have been connected to the grid across the province.
Since the program began, the Province says that the Green Energy Act has helped create over 20,000 jobs and is on track to create 50,000 jobs by the end of 2012.
The Green Energy Act included a commitment to review the FIT program every two years. The Province together with the Ontario Power Authority has announced plans for the scheduled review of the Ontario FiT program.
