There are about half a million natural gas wells in the United States. Two technologies have fueled the rapid expansion of shale-gas wells, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing ("fracking"). Horizontal drilling enables production from relatively thin shale deposits. The Barnett shale was the first shale gas deposit to be exploited, initially through conventional vertical drilling, but from 2004 and later using horizontal drilling.
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) has put together an animation that shows the rapid proliferation of horizontal wells around and in Fort Worth Texas (including the airport) from fewer than 400 in 2004 to more than 10,000 during 2010. In 2010 90% of total Barnett natural gas production came from horizontal wells.
