I blogged previously about some of the massive water diversion projects around the world, perhaps the most dramatic of the results of which is the incredible shrinking of the Aral Sea, where an entire fishing industry disappeared as a result.
I just came across another, Lake Orumiyeh in northeastern Iran, one of the world's largest landlocked salt lakes with a surface area of 5,200 km2. The images were taken in August 1998 and August 2011 and the shrinking of the lake is almost as striking as the Aral Sea. Some 60 streams and rivers feed Lake Orumiyeh. The shrinking has been attributed to population growth, diversion of rivers for agriculture, and climate change.
