Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has announced that the nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have been successfully brought to cold shutdown.
The timetable for decommissioning the reactors will take place over 40 years
- Spent nuclear fuel rods from the pool at the No.4 reactor will be removed within 2 years.
- Melted nuclear fuel inside reactors Nos.1, 2 and 3 will be recovered within 25 years.
- Work to scrap the reactors and the outer buildings would then proceed and be completed within 40 years.
The work would be performed simultaneously at all 3 reactors. It involves identifying and repairing fractures in the reactor containment vessels while dealing with large amounts of radioactive water.
