The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued a final rule governing the integration of intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar PV into the transmission grid. This is seen as a step forward in leveling the playing field between traditional methods of generation and intermittent renewables.
FERC determined that transmission customers can be subject to excessive charges because currently they can not schedule power delivery with a granularity of less than an hour. The rule allows transmission consumers to schedule transmission service at 15-minute intervals. It also requires intermittent power generators to provide transmission companies with meteorological and operational data to facilitate forecasting of power generation.
The final rule takes effect 12 months after publication in the Federal Register.
