The third annual UK industry-wide Building Information Modelling (BIM) survey, undertaken by NBS, was conducted between December 2012 and February 2013. More than 1,350 professionals participated, from a range of business sizes and disciplines including architecture, engineering and surveying.
39% of respondents to the NBS survey said that they were using BIM. 71% agreed that BIM represents the 'future of project information'. 73% reported that clients will increasingly insist on its use, 66% saying the same about contractors and 51% confirming that the Government 'is on the right track with BIM'. Th is perhaps not surprising given that the UK Government has mandated BIM for government projects beginning in 2016. It is surprising in this context that many respondents said they were not clear about impotant aspects of BIM, including the different levels in the UK BIM maturity model.
Of those who have adopted BIM, the top benefits reported by respondents resulting from the introduction of BIM were
- three-quarters reported better coordination of construction documents
- more than half reported greater cost efficiencies
- others cited Improved productivity due to easy retrieval of information
- better quality visualizations.
