According to the GPS Standard Positioning Service (SPS) Performance Standard, the GPS signal in space will provide a "worst case" accuracy of 7.8 meters at a 95% confidence level. But the actual accuracy users experience depends on external factors including atmospheric effects and receiver quality. Real-world data collected by the FAA show that some high quality GPS receivers currently provide better than 3 meter horizontal accuracy.
South Korea has just announced a differential GPS technology technology that can run in any ordinary digital multimedia broadcasting device by simply replacing the GPS chip. The device can reduce the horizontal error to about a meter. The technology will be available next year according to the announcement.
