I've blogged previously about carbon taxes being introduced in British Columbia and Australia (expected to be revoked). The French Government has announced a tax on all fossil fuels in proportion to the emissions they generate. It is estimated that the tax will generate € 4 billion by 2016, The government intends to use the money to help fund green energy measures. President François Hollande is on record for calling for heavy investment in renewable energy in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
In addition to the carbon tax, the government has said it will also impose a levy on profits from France's nuclear power network, which is responsible for generating over 70% of France's electric power.
