Innovation in spatial technology is transforming some of the world’s most important economic sectors. The world will need to spend $57 trillion on infrastructure through 2030 just to keep up with global GDP growth. To meet the world's future infrastructure needs, construction needs to be reinvented through a productivity revolution. Two spatial technologies, reality capture and building information modeling (BIM), are key to this transformation of construction. A series of two articles on the new spatial technologies that are transforming construction including hand-held scanners, single-photon laser scanning, SLAM for indoor navigation and autonomous UAVs, beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) UAVs, satellite images with 30 cm (about a foot) resolution, and daily digital images of the entire Earth landmass from satellites is appearing in Damage Prevention Professional.
